Shooter Bindra Wins India's First Individual Olympic Gold Medal

Abhinav Bindra secured India's first individual gold medal in Olympic history today in the men's 10- meter air rifle shooting competition in Beijing today.

The 25-year-old Bindra, the world champion in the event, won with a score of 596 ahead of defending champion Zhu Qinan of China and Finland's Henri Hakkinen.

India's previous eight Olympic gold medals came from its field hockey team, which failed to qualify for the Beijing Games. The world's second-most populous country had won individual silver and bronze medals in sprinting, hurdling, shooting, tennis and weightlifting.

I was not thinking too much, I just tried to shoot well,'' Bindra told reporters.

India's previous best individual performances were sprinting and hurdling silver medals by Norman Pritchard at the 1900 Paris Games, according to the International Olympic Committee. Trap shooter Rajyavardhan Rathore's also won silver in Athens four years ago.

Hyderabad Flood toll rises to 13

The death toll due to heavy rains and flash floods in Andhra Pradesh rose to 13 on Wednesday while several villages remained inundated and the Godavari River in spate.

The authorities were on alert in Khammam district as the Godavari river crossed the first danger mark of 43 feet in the temple town of Bhadrachalam. People living in low-lying areas along the river were being evacuated as rains continued for the fourth consecutive day. The level Wednesday stood at 46 feet and is likely to rise further.

Officials said 33 villages along the river were inundated. Authorities have already evacuated 1,000 families to safe places.

Two villages remained marooned in Asifabad revenue division of Adilabad, the worst-hit district. Authorities have already evacuated people from some villages by using motor boats.

Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy reviewed the situation at a high-level meeting here Wednesday and directed the officials to monitor the situation closely and take up evacuation from all low-lying areas.

The heavy rains and flash floods have claimed 13 lives, including four children, during the last three days. Ratnaprabha, commissioner for disaster management, told newsmen that four people each were killed in Adilabad and East Godavari districts. Three deaths were reported from Khammam while West Godavari and Warangal districts accounted for a death each.

The chief minister announced a compensation of Rs. 100,000 each to the kin of those killed.

The official said heavy rains damaged 1,664 houses and crop over 44,000 hectares.

Taking a serious note of the breach of Palem vagu reservoir built under the ambitious Jalayagnam programme in Khammam district, the chief minister asked the irrigation department to take utmost care in quality control and insist on expert third-party inspection.

CHIRANJEEVI'S POLITICAL PARTY TO BE LAUNCHED IN TIRUPATI

Popular Telugu film star Chiranjeevi is all set to take a plunge into Andhra Pradesh politics and launch his own party from the temple town of Tirupati on August 22 which also happens to be his birth date.

Chiranjeevi who is the mega star of Telugu cinema is likely to address a public meeting in the temple town of Tirupati. The actor has selected Tirupati as the platform to launch his political career because of his attachment to the place, famous for the Lord Venkateshwara temple.

Chiranjeevi's brother-in-law and advisor Allu Arvind Wednesday visited Tirupati as part of the preparations for the public meeting. He visited a few grounds in the town to select the venue for the meeting. However every thing connected to the preparations for the political party launch function has been kept a secret. The meeting is likely to be attended by lakhs of people from various parts of the A.P, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Orissa and also from abroad.

Chiranjeevi, who has a massive fan following, recently told media that he would announce his party in August. After the meeting, he will embark on a state-wide yatra or tour to prepare ground for the assembly and the Lok Sabha elections scheduled to be held in March next year. The actor's brother K. Nagendra Babu, brother-in-law Allu Arvind and some close aides have been holding meetings of various sections of people for the last few weeks, as part of preparations for the new party's launch.

Sources close to Chiranjeevi said he would contest the elections from the Tirupati constituency. He will thus be following in the footsteps of thespian and Telugu Desam Party's (TDP) late founder N.T. Rama Rao, who considered the temple town auspicious for his politics.

Chiranjeevi is looking to repeat NTR's feat, who created a record by coming to power within nine months of his founding the TDP. NTR also contested elections from Tirupati and launched every election campaign from that town

Katrina Kaif experiments with her curls

Bollywood stunner Katrina Kaif dons two different hairstyles for this Friday’s release Singh Is Kinng .

The brief Katrina was given by director Anees Bazmee and producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah at the start of the film was that she had to have a different look than her last release with Akshay Kumar – Welcome .

Katrina, who is known for taking personal interest in styling her own look in films, worked in tandem with designer Rocky S .

Given the fact that Katrina plays a fun-loving girl in ‘Singh Is Kinng’, the duo unanimously agreed on a funky look with shorter hair than what Katrina usually likes to keep.

However, for a small portion of the film Katrina does sport long hair with stylish curls. She also coloured her hair for the film.

Aamir Khan to be face of 'Incredible India'

It's now Aamir Khan's turn to sell India to the world! The Bollywood hero has been roped in by the tourism ministry to be the face of its brand campaign 'Incredible India' to showcase the country's rich heritage and culture and the message, 'Athithi Devo Bhava' (guest is god).

Khan, who met Tourism Minister Ambika Soni personally to receive the offer officially in the national capital Friday, said he was more than happy to be part of the campaign.

“I have accepted the invitation. I am very happy to be part of it. It is a wonderful country and 'incredible' is the fitting word for it,” Khan, who was wearing a black T-shirt over rugged and torn jeans, told reporters at Soni's residence here.

However, the ministry is yet to finalise the type of campaign it wants to do for the coming year.

“We will be coming out with an ad campaign and a road show to promote India's tourism. It will highlight the culture and heritage of the country, which are the USPs of our country,” the minister said.

The actor, who said he would be working free of cost for the campaign, appeared to have a fair idea about what he was going to do.

“We should show our hospitality. India is famous for it. Even if there are some incidents, we should take steps to sensitise people,” he said.

“Each social work is different. Through this, I want to remind people how great is our country and want to sensitize our people. I want to tell them what we are -- we are warm and hospitable people. We have to protect those who are visiting our country. We must ensure that they have a good time and come back again.”

The 'Incredible India' campaign launched in 2002, showcasing the country's unique heritage and cultural aspects, has been a major hit and made considerable impact on its tourism sector.

Khan made it clear that his participation was a part of his social commitments and he had no plans to enter politics.

“I am an entertainer and will continue to do good work. I am part of it because I want to spread social message.”

Earlier, Shah Rukh Khan was a part of the campaign for creating awareness on garbage disposal.

According to Aamir, films are good way to showcase India. “After the movie 'Lagan', wherever I go, I used to meet people who were interested in visiting India.”

Asked if the recent terror attacks - in Bangalore and Ahmedabad - would damage the country's aspirations in the tourism sector, Aamir said: “Terrorism is against everyone. We should be united. We are for peace and if there is one bomb blast, we should light a billion candles.”

“If they (terrorists) are spreading poison, we should spread the message of love and peace,” he said.

Bollywood director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and lyricist Prasoon Joshi were also present.

Navjot Sidhu's debut movie's music released

Cricketer, commentator, MP and now actor -- Navjot Singh Sidhu's debut movie's music was released Friday here.

Sidhu will be sharing screen space with Punjabi singer and actor Harbhajan Mann in "Mera pind-My home", slated to release in September.

Music of the movie and a microsite was released here Friday. The microsite will offer an array of features for the users like ringtones, wallpapers, downloads, information about the cast and crew of the movie and caller tunes.

"My life is based on experiments and I have tried my hands at infinite things. But I have no qualms in saying that this experiment of acting was the best one of my life," Sidhu told media persons during the music launch here Friday.

"I did not know anything about the acting and dialogue delivery but I learnt it only on the sets from other cast members," he said.

"I am ready to do more Punjabi films in future, but the only condition is that they should portray meaningful and responsible cinema. Films are the best medium to diffuse any social message in the society and have the capacity to bring unexpected positive changes. I believe in becoming master of all trades and jack of none," said Sidhu.

The movie is produced and directed by Punjabi film maker Manmohan Singh.

Sidhu is playing the role of a rich fun loving non-resident Indian (NRI) settled in a small village of Punjab who brings in the spirit of self-empowerment among the villagers of his village, said Manmohan Singh.

Dino Morea teams up with Kareena Kapoor in his first production

Actor-producer Dino Morea is ready to adapt a British play on screen and says he will team up with the much-sought after Kareena Kapoor in his first movie as a producer.

Dino and Kareena bonded beautifully when they shot the ICI Dulux Velvet Touch paint ad in Rajasthan with Karan Johar last year.

"Karan played the lead with Kareena while I was just the silent producer. I made her promise that if and when I produce a film she'd have to be my co-star. I never knew the director for my first feature film would have the same idea," Dino told IANS.

The actor, who is smarting under a double blow - "Bhram" and "Anamika" bombed at the box office - is playing it safe. Last year he had signed ad filmmaker Shamim Desai for his first film as producer, but Desai backed out.

"It's an adaptation of a very successful play from Britain. At this stage, I'd rather not say more because someone is always there to pull the rug from under your feet.

"The hit play in Britain was directed by a very talented guy called Pravesh Kumar and now I've hired him to direct my first feature film based on his own play," says Dino.

The film will be based on one of Pravesh's two hit plays - "Deranged Marriage" or "Something About Simi".

But why Kareena and not Dino's close friend Lara Dutta?

"Kareena suits the role perfectly. It's almost as if the role was conceived for her. She's meant to play the part. In fact, the play is named after her character."

For the time being Dino has decided to cut loose from all outside assignments.

"For many years I've done films to earn money so I could buy my car, house and a life in Mumbai. Now I need to build a body of work, and just my body," Dino quips.

He has only one film on the floors.

"In 'Acid Factory', producer Sanjay Gupta and director Suparn Varma have given me a completely new look. I haven't ever grown my hair to shoulder-length. I better do it now or soon it'd be too late."

Dino's co-stars in "Acid Factory" are Aftab Shivdasani, Fardeen Khan, Manoj Bajpai and Danny Denzongpa.

"I'm working with Danny and Manoj for the first time and what an experience! I yearn to learn from actors who know more than me. We bond really well. We have to because we're all supposed to be locked up in this factory from which we cannot escape."

After a moment Dino adds: "Fortunately, there's an escape route to my career. Making my own films."

Kamal Haasan's Rs 150 crore film!

After the success of his last Tamil film, Dasavathaaram, Kamal Haasan [Images] has already started work on his next project titled Marmayogi. The film, which is touted to be Kamal Haasan's answer to Hollywood movies like Gladiator and Braveheart in sheer grandeur, comes at a cost of a whopping Rs 1.50 crores!

A state-of-the-art camera called Red Eye would be used for shooting. Since the camera's daily rent is around Rs 30,000, the producer is planning to purchase a brand new one instead of hiring it.

The film is set against the backdrop of the seventh century BC. Kamal is planning to use up the video footage he had shot for his 'on-again, off-again' project Maruthanayagam. At least, by doing so, he can ensure that some part of the amount spent for Maruthanayagam is used up in a useful manner.

Another interesting thing about the movie is that Hema Malini, who played a brief role in Kamal's Hey Ram, has been roped in to play a negative role -- her first such role in an illustrious career spanning more than three decades.

Katrina solves Salman-Shahrukh spat

Days have gone by since the news of the spat between Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan broke out. No ugly incident took place again. So, who solved the problem? Katrina Kaif. How did she solve the whole issue? By saying nothing.

Well, journalists have the habit of creating a mountain out of a mole hill. They blow things out of proportion if the individuals involved in the rumour react and speak out. The controversy on Salman-Shahrukh spat would have turn really ugly if not for the cool attitude of Katrina Kaif. She solved the problem by keeping silent and not speaking to the media about the incident.

Now, people have stopped talking about the spat and
Katrina is said to be back in Salman's life. All is well that ends well!

Movie review - Singh is Kinng

sinmaa rating: 2.5/5
Punchline: plot is not the kinng
Banner: Studio 18 & Blockbuster Movie Entertainers
Genre: Comedy
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Neha Dhupia, Javed Jaffrey, Ranvir Shorey, Kamal Chopra, Om Puri, Sudhanshu Pandey, Sonu Sood, Kirron Kher, Yashpal Sharma
Music Director: Pritam Chakraborty
Cinematography: Ben Nott
Lyricist: Mayur Puri
Art: Adam Head
Story - screenplay - direction: Anees Bazmee
Producer: Vipul Shah
Release date: 8 August 2008

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Story
Happy Singh (Akshay Kumar) is a wayward guy in a remote village of Punjab. He is innocent and very good at heart. Lucky Singh (Sonu Sood) is also from the same village and is a big mafia don in Australia. He is referred to as 'King'. Fed up by Happy Singh, the village men entrust the job of bringing Lucky Singh back from Australia because Lucky's father is bedridden (why can't they just make a phone call). The hell breaks lose as Happy reaches Australia and he is forced to take the mantle of don from Lucky. The rest of the story is all about how Happy Singh tries to play 'Munna Bhai' to get the Sardarji don gang rehabilitated.

Actors:
Akshay Kumar's portrayal of a simpleton Singh is exceptionally exemplary. His comedy timing and body language is admirably funny when he makes a fool of himself. Katrina Kaif is sexy and sophisticated. Her acting has improved a lot and she can dance well. Om Puri is superb as the sidekick of Akshay. Kiron Kher is good. Javed Jaffery's comedy does not work out. Sonu Sood is nice. Ranvir Shorey is wasted. Neha Dhupia is gorgeous.

Technical departments:

Story - Screenplay - direction: The story of the film is simple. It is a comedy film that does not care for logic. The director has managed to establish each and every character in a strong way and he ran the first half in an entertaining way. The director tried to create the Priyadarshan's type of slapstick comedy in the second half, but failed. The pace goes down and the story meanders in the second half. But he made sure that there are some fresh comedy moments in the film which you would remember after watching the film. The way Sonu Sood is abused in the second half is entertaining. Screenplay is good in the first half and a little shabby in the second half.

Technical departments: Music of the film is pretty nice with 'Singh is King' and 'Jee Karda' being chartbusters. Dialogues are witty and good. Cinematography is cool with rich visuals. Production values are grand. Editing is ok. Runtime of the film is considerably less.

Analysis: First half of the film is very good. The second half is shabby. The plus points of the film are Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif and comedy moments. The negative part is lack of proper narration in the second half where people get bored. On a whole, if you like mindless entertainment you may watch this film.

Deepika tops Maxim Hot 100 girls list

Bollywood's new entrant Deepika Padukone, whose second film "Bachna Ae Haseeno" is due for release Aug 15, is considered the hot favourite actress by Indian audiences across the globe. She tops the popular Maxim Hot 100 girls worldwide list.

The Maxim Hot list makes its debut in India and the "Om Shanti Om" star, Deepika, is winner of the first edition.

"To be honest, personally I never thought of myself as 'sexy' or 'hot' but if that's the call that people have taken, then I hope I live up to it. I am so excited about this," Deepika said in a press statement.

She joins the likes of previous Bollywood celebrity-winners like Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif and Kareena Kapoor.

"Deepika was our choice as the winner because apart from her huge fan following with the new generation of Indians, she also has the potential to be an international face. This calls for a huge party," said Anup Kutty, editor of Maxim-India.

Deepika will be felicitated August end in Mumbai.

Patriotism Points in 'Bachna Ae Haseeno'

Next Friday, it will be yet another test at the box office for Yash Raj with the release of Siddarth Anand's much-awaited flick, Bachna Ae Haseeno. With heartthrob Ranbir Kapoor in the lead and three hotties Minnisha, Deepika, and Bipasha co-starring, the film looks very promising. With a release date of the fifteenth of August one wonders if there's any patriotic element in this romantic comedy.

When asked about the possibility of patriotism in his film, Siddarth Anand responded, "Ranbir plays Raj Sharma who makes video games for Microsoft, Bipasha plays a modern woman, Minissha plays a girl from Punjab and Deepika is an NRI who lives in Australia in the film so there is absolutely no space for patriotism as the film is a romantic tale." Though playfully he added, "My film will make you love the country's cinema... that way it will be patriotic!"

The film is actually not the only release that Friday. Also set to release is the Salman Khan biggie God Tussi Great Ho. With that tough competition we wonder what the final score will be for YRF. Hopefully they will score a super hit with Bachna Ae Haseeno!

Now Kareena Kapoor to go Hollywood

Rumour has it that Kareena will star in Chamera alongside Billy Zane. The film will be shot in India. Her agent explained, “This is one of the many projects that Kareena has been offered. They are paying her a handsome amount since she fits the role perfectly. She will be making an official announcement soon.”

Billy first caught audience’s attention in the gripping thriller Dead Calm alongside Nicole Kidman and then went on to star in diverse movies such as the cult-favourite, The Phantom, as well as Femme Fatale, Titanic, Cleopatra, Vlad, Bloodrayne and the extraordinary This World, And Then The Fireworks with Gina Gershon.

Kareena, of course, is currently one of the most bankable stars in Bollywood. Having taken the trouble to establish her acting credentials in movies such as Chameli, Dev and Omkara, she has since gone on to great commercial success in movies such as Jab We Met, for which she won the Filmfare Best Actress Award. CNN commented at the time, “Uninhibited and spontaneous, Kareena Kapoor is the soul of this picture, its biggest strength, as she brings alive her character with not just those smart lines, but with the kind of candour actors seldom invest in their work. I can't think of a greater compliment to pay her than to say with full confidence that no actress could play Geet better than Kareena has."

Actor Attempts Suicide in front of Ekta’s Office

Ekta Kapoor had hit her peak and got monotonous and boring after that. But what is amazing is despite she produces serials which seem like clones of one another, despite she launches a dozen new very forgettable actors with every serial, and despite that she has the most uncreative battalion of writers at her office, people are still desperate to work with her.

A young lad, all of 28 years, set himself ablaze right in front of Ekta Kapoor’s office. It is said that this man, Akshay Shivam Shukla has been living in Asaram Bapu’s ashram in Ahmedabad since six years. He like other millions of Indians dreamed of making it big in Bollywood. Apart from his acting skills, he also wanted to show Kapoor the scripts and songs he had written, hoping she might rope him in for a break.

The security guards were too harsh on Akshay, he repeatedly dropped at Kapoor’s office but he was not allowed to meet Ekta. One day, even though he managed to sneak past the security, he was shoved out again to his bad luck. In a fit of rage and frustration, Akshay turned a bottle of kerosene over and set himself ablaze.

By the time the security guards took notice and threw him into the nearby gutter to extinguish the flame, he had suffered 45 percent burns. He is now recuperating at Cooper Hospital, Vile Parle.

Wonder if Ekta will notice him now.

Vidya does a nude shot for FHM magazine

Now don’t let your tongue’s wag guy’s coz Vidya has not gone complete nude for the photo spread but has covered her nudity with a white bed sheet.

The Kismet Konnection girl will be seen shedding her clothes for the FHM magazine. For a change the girl-next-door would be seen posing sexily and seductively for the International Men’s magazine. And no prize for guessing the hottest snap of all is the one where Vidya covers her bare body with a bedsheet.

Vidya Balan opens up about the raunchy photoshoot, “I think what we shot for the cover was really very interesting especially where we used sheets and all and it’s just that there is a great sensuality to it. I always think that minimal make-up and no fuss hair takes away from everything and it’s all about the eyes,” she says.

Well with all the love handles and extra flab she likes to flaunt it was a good decision to cover up her body with a white bedsheet.

Ah! Bless the white bedsheet
